Museums spanning archaeology and everyday history
The Goldbach MUSEUM opened in March 2025 in the renovated Stiegler-Hof. It invites visitors to discover the history of the market town of Ergoldsbach and the surrounding villages in the Goldbachtal. The museum in the Heimathaus Essenbach offers an archaeological perspective on the region: its more than 300 finds all come from the municipality of Essenbach and provide an overview of almost 7,500 years of settlement history in the middle Isar valley. The precise provenance of the finds makes this place particularly interesting if you want to learn what archaeological evidence can reveal about the settlement of a specific area.
The Heimatmuseum Vilsbiburg – Kröninger Hafnermuseum focuses on “Kröninger Geschirr” (Kröning pottery) and the working and living conditions of potters. A total of 15 rooms also cover prehistory and early history, local history, social institutions, domestic culture and crafts. The Altdorf Museum, meanwhile, brings together architectural and exhibition history: it is a historic timber-frame building whose components were dated to 1547 and 1550 using tree-ring analysis. Archaeological finds, excavation results and scientific findings offer insights into the living conditions and burial customs of past societies. The dates and exhibition themes provide two different ways of exploring the past – through the building itself and through people’s lives.
Using a range of exhibits, the permanent exhibition “Leib und Seel” at the Geisenhausen Museum explores how people in the municipality on the Vils kept body and soul together throughout history. The Aichbachtaler Heimatmuseum presents a small collection on prehistory and early history and the development of the village and its surroundings. It includes excavation finds from the Renaissance as well as farming and craft tools from past centuries. The Vinum Celticum Museum offers insights into the world of the Celts and winegrowing in the region; the Bayerisches Trachtenkulturzentrum Holzhausen brings together a traditional costume culture museum and a youth education centre.
Other subjects are explored at the Radio Museum in Rottenburg an der Laaber, which provides an overview of every era of broadcasting, and at the Altdorf Museum, with its archaeological and scientific perspectives. At the Schulmuseum Ahrain in Oberahrain, lessons are taught in a historic classroom as they were more than 100 years ago; the interactive museum uses a hands-on approach. Active excursions and regional routes
There are also plenty of opportunities to get moving. In Niederaichbach, a Kneipp facility is located right on the Landshuter Höhenwanderweg. The Waketoolz Wakepark in Wörth an der Isar has two cable systems: one is 890 metres long and the smaller one is about 200 metres.
For cycling enthusiasts, the Rottalradweg starts in Velden a. d. Vils in the Landshut district, where it connects to the Vilstalradweg. From there, it follows the Rott from its source to its mouth in the River Inn, which forms the Bavarian-Austrian border, near Neuhaus am Inn. The Time Trails are themed routes through the Isar, Vils and Laaber valleys, adding further routes with a thematic focus to this regional perspective.
