Explore the city's history and art

The Cross Gate (Kreuztor) is one of Ingolstadt's landmarks, dating from the second half of the 14th century. It was one of four major main gates built during the medieval expansion of the city. The building therefore tells not only the story of a single gate, but also of the city's expansion at the time. As part of exhibitions, the Cross Gate is regularly open from March to October; admission is free. If you would like to plan your visit around it, take this seasonal opening period into account.

Another way to explore art history is at the Asam Church of Maria de Victoria. It was built in 1732/36 as a prayer hall for the Marian Congregation. The church contains a ceiling painting by Cosmas Damian Asam measuring 42 x 16 metres. The Lepanto monstrance is also on display in the sacristy. The architecture, painting and exhibit offer different points of interest for a cultural and historical tour of Ingolstadt.

Museums of automotive and medical history

The Audi museum mobile presents the history of the Audi brand. On display are more than 100 cars and two-wheelers, along with multimedia exhibits. The focus is therefore on both the vehicles and the presentation of the brand's history. Audi Forum Ingolstadt is open to all interested visitors.

The German Museum of the History of Medicine is located south of the historic old town. Its permanent exhibition tells the story of medicine in the 18th century. The museum also includes a Baroque medicinal herb garden, inviting visitors to look around, learn and stroll. The exhibition and the garden offer different points of focus: the former centres on the history of medicine, while the latter offers the chance to encounter medicinal plants in a landscaped garden. This may help you decide what to visit if you would like to combine historical themes with time outdoors.

Parks, cycling routes and walks through the city

Klenzepark is a landscaped public park on the southern bank of the Danube. A bridge reserved for pedestrians and cyclists connects the park with the old town. This makes it possible to combine a park visit with time in the old town, on foot or by bicycle. Ingolstadt's cycling network also includes four themed cycling routes that start, end or pass through the city. If cycling is one of your travel interests, you can consider these routes as a focus for your trip.

Public transport is another factor to consider: Stadtbus Ingolstadt GmbH accounts for about 90 percent of scheduled bus services in the city centre covered by the VGI timetable. When planning, be sure to check the specific connection for each destination; this figure describes the share in the city centre, not a single route.

Literary sites and local brewing history

The Marieluise Fleißer House is a museum dedicated to the life and work of the writer and also serves as a venue for cultural events. The Marieluise Fleißer walking tour links historic locations with Fleißer's texts, which can be read aloud at each location or read on displays. Biography, literature and historic sites are thus all central to this experience.

The Schanzer Beer Tour offers another thematic experience: a guided tour about beer and Ingolstadt's local brewing history. It has a different focus from the museums and literary sites.
