Castles, Monasteries and Historical Traces

In Roßtal, the Archaeological Circular Trail passes the excavation sites of the former castle. Large information boards explain the history of “urbs horsadal”—the name used for Roßtal in its first documented mention in 954. Roßtal is also home to the extensively restored Museum Courtyard, with archaeological and local history collections. In Cadolzburg, parts of the castle dating from around 1250 have been preserved; the interactive castle experience museum “HerrschaftsZeiten! Erlebnis Cadolzburg” explores the history of the site. At Cadolzburg Castle, the 75-minute family overview tour “HerrschaftsZeiten! Langenzenn also brings together several historical details: the former Augustinian Canons’ monastery complex dates from 1409 and has an exceptionally well-preserved cloister. It forms a three-wing complex north of the town church, the Trinity Church. Augmented reality features from the Erlebnis-Hohenzollern app can also be used at the monastery courtyard. In the area around Fürth, the Count of Faber-Castell’s castle brings Faber-Castell’s 265-year company and family history to life; online booking is required for a visit.

Trails with Different Focal Points

For a day hike, the Hohenzollern Cultural Hiking Trail runs from Roßtal to Langenzenn along field and forest paths. Cultural and historical stops are located in Roßtal, Cadolzburg and Langenzenn; the trail has been awarded the “Wanderbares Deutschland” seal. For a longer circular tour, the approximately 50-kilometre Allianz Circular Trail offers a route for hikers and cyclists through Ammerndorf, Cadolzburg, Großhabersdorf, Oberasbach, Roßtal, Stein and Zirndorf in the southern part of the district of Fürth. In Ammerndorf, the Art and Nature Trail links works of art and sculptures with the Bibert Valley Cycle Route. The trail is 2.5 kilometres long; four themed routes pass through the countryside and the town, and along the cycle route. Information boards explain ecological features, and the nature trail starts at the threshing machine house. The Hohenzollern Adventure Cycle Route offers another way to engage with history along the way: a companion app enables a virtual journey through time. The cycle route is around 95 kilometres long and can be ridden on either of two route variants.

Nature and Options for Different Days

The Hainberg Nature Reserve lies mostly within the district of Fürth; a smaller part is in Nuremberg. It covers 213 hectares, borders the Rednitz River and has been in existence since 1995. As a refuge and habitat, it provides a home for many threatened plants and animals. The area also includes the largest sand grassland in northern Bavaria—a distinct natural attraction alongside the historical sites and trails.

In the area around Fürth, the PLAYMOBIL FunPark in Zirndorf offers 90,000 square metres of opportunities for climbing, balancing and play. For bad weather, there is the 5,000-square-metre, glass-enclosed HOB-Center, with life-size PLAYMOBIL settings, extensive play areas, a show stage, an experience-focused restaurant and a coffee bar. This gives you different options for planning your day, both indoors and outdoors. Also in Zirndorf, the tower of the Old Fortress, rebuilt in 1980, has an observation platform with views over Zirndorf, Nuremberg, Fürth and the surrounding area.

If you want to factor trails and transport connections into your plans, consider the Wallenstein’s Camp Adventure Trail: it starts in Stein-Unterweihersbuch, and the starting point is easily reached from Nuremberg by bus and underground. Check connections before setting off. The Zirndorf Museum is listed as open Tuesday to Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; check the opening hours before your visit.
