In Buttenwiesen, cycling routes and history take centre stage: the Donauried Sculpture Trail connects to existing cycling routes, including the Via Danubia. On the Thürlesberg is a Roman lookout point, one of the sights along this route. Other highlights include the “370 Years of Jewish Life in Buttenwiesen” construction-fence exhibition and a Jewish heritage site with a mikveh, cemetery and exhibition room in the former synagogue. Together, these offer a range of themes to help you plan your trip.

Sculpture Trail, Via Danubia and Thürlesberg

The Donauried Sculpture Trail is a joint project by Buttenwiesen and Wertingen, in cooperation with the Donautal-Aktiv e.V. regional association. Its connection to existing cycling routes, including the Via Danubia, links the trail to the cycling network. The Roman lookout point on the Thürlesberg in Buttenwiesen is one of the sights along the Via Danubia.

The Via Danubia between Bad Gögging and Passau is considered a moderately challenging route and is especially suitable for cycling; it can also be explored on foot. March to November is the recommended time to visit this route. When planning your trip, you can weigh up a cycling tour against walking the route, without limiting yourself to just one way of travelling.

The history of the Via Danubia also provides a chronological reference point: the route has existed since 2001. A new section, almost 67 kilometres long, between Günzburg and Oberndorf am Lech opened in 2006. These details refer to the wider regional course of the Via Danubia.

Jewish History in Buttenwiesen

The “370 Years of Jewish Life in Buttenwiesen” construction-fence exhibition is located at Louis-Lamm-Platz and in the area around the former synagogue. The Jewish heritage site in Buttenwiesen includes a mikveh, a Jewish cemetery and an exhibition room in the former synagogue. These specific places add a distinct cultural and historical focus to the route and Roman lookout point.

If you plan to visit the exhibition or the Jewish heritage site, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

More experiences in the wider destination of Dillingen An Der Donau

The DonAUwald hiking trail offers another perspective on the region within the wider destination of Dillingen An Der Donau. It runs for just under 60 kilometres through the floodplain forests along the Danube, with 40 kilometres of the route in the district of Dillingen. It is Bavarian Swabia’s first premium hiking trail. All five classic stages are easily accessible by train. This offers a different focus from the cycling routes and cultural sites in Buttenwiesen: here, the emphasis is on a longer hiking route in the regional context.

The Donautal-Radelspaß is another regional experience. It takes place every two years on a weekend in September, with the central event held in the district of Dillingen. Three signposted routes, closed to cars, take cyclists on culinary and cultural tours. Check the event date for the year you plan to travel.

Over many years, gravel extraction along the Danube in the district of Dillingen has created a landscape of water and lakes. The seven chapels aim to create a landmark and an architectural statement in the landscape, carrying on the tradition of chapel building through contemporary design. Both themes broaden the regional perspective to include landscape and architecture, without attributing them to Buttenwiesen.
