Roggenburg combines monastery culture with trails by the water and through green surroundings. The abbey church and monastery museum offer different ways to explore history and art; by Roggenburger Weiher, a short circular trail focuses on the soil. There are also hiking and cycling trails, as well as a recurring cultural programme. When planning your holiday, you can choose between days focused on culture and active time outdoors.

Monastery Culture, Art and Music

Roggenburg Abbey Church was built from 1752 to 1758. Today it serves as a parish church and is one of the most significant Rococo buildings in Swabia. Roggenburg Monastery Museum complements this architectural theme with a different focus: it presents Swabian monastery culture, with Baroque art treasures at the heart of its permanent exhibition. The two offer contrasting perspectives—the historic church building and the art on display.

The “Roggenburger Sommer” cultural programme includes church concerts, family concerts and open-air events in the monastery courtyard. Internationally renowned organists regularly perform on the “Große Roggenburgerin.” The meditation garden at Roggenburg Monastery also features an ivy maze with 300 varieties of ivy. This garden offers a different focus from the church and museum, highlighting the variety of ivy.

Guided tours of the monastery museum are available by appointment, and can include a tour of the church on request. Individual events and schedules may change. If you would like a tour or concert to be a highlight of your stay, arrange the date in advance.

Circular Trails, Water and Cycling

The Roggenburg Soil Discovery Trail is by Roggenburger Weiher and is an approximately 1 km circular route. Its eight stations combine information panels and soil exposures with interactive features such as a soil puzzle and a treasure chest of soil finds. Those who enjoy solving puzzles together will find a hands-on activity here; information and participation are equally part of the trail.

A longer hiking option is the Weiherweg. It is about 6.5 km long, passes through the municipality of Roggenburg and starts at car park P 3 south of the education centre. The trails therefore differ clearly in length: the Soil Discovery Trail is a short loop, while the Weiherweg is a longer route.

Boating is possible on Klosterweiher along the Weiherweg. Conditions may vary; if you plan to go boating, it is best to check the current situation in advance. There is also a named cycling route through Roggenburg: the four-star “Donautäler” long-distance cycle route passes through here along the “Klostergarten-Runde” section.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Roggenburg, your preferred holiday rhythm can be a good starting point. If you would like to plan a concert or guided tour, take its scheduled date into account; hiking and cycling trips can be arranged around your own daily plans. Consider whether you would like monastery culture and events or active time on the trails and by the pond to be the main focus of your stay.
