Neu-Ulm combines art and architecture with green spaces and routes for walking and cycling. The Edwin Scharff Museum, the preserved sections of the Federal Fortress and the parks reveal different sides of the city. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you would like to focus primarily on exhibitions, a creative activity, time outdoors or longer cycling tours.

Discover art and architecture

The Edwin Scharff Museum is located at Petrusplatz in the heart of Neu-Ulm. It brings together an art museum and a children’s museum under one roof. The permanent exhibitions are dedicated to Edwin Scharff, the painter, graphic artist and sculptor born in Neu-Ulm, as well as the artist Ernst Geitlinger. The museum therefore offers a specific starting point if you would like to explore art during your trip.

The Children’s Museum’s “Mach-Mit-Sonntage” (participatory Sundays) offer a shared creative activity: visitors of all ages can get creative themselves in the museum workshop under the guidance of the educational team. Families who would like to include some hands-on creativity alongside looking at exhibits can take this offering into account. Another notable destination for architecture enthusiasts is St. Johann Baptist, one of Germany’s most important Expressionist religious buildings.

The digital art tour also offers a way to explore the city. It brings together 32 works of art, places and examples of architecture across three thematically linked tours. This means art can be experienced beyond the museum: the tours also draw attention to works and buildings in the urban landscape. The Ulm/Neu-Ulm Federal Fortress is also part of the area’s history: in Neu-Ulm, for example, around half of the structure that remains has been preserved.

Green spaces and a short walk

The grounds of the former Ulm Federal Fortress are now a banana-shaped city park: the Glacis. The Glacis grounds include a small lakeside stage and a beer garden, with a children’s playground right next to them. These different features give you options for how to spend time outdoors. In Kollmannspark, the area around the Neu-Ulm Water Tower is also a pleasant place to stroll.

If you would like to combine culture and exercise, you can include the easy “Fortress and Danube Views, Neu-Ulm” route in your plans for the day. It is 4.30 km long and takes about 1 hour and 1 minute. The route leads from Schießhausallee to St. Johann Baptist Church. Its length and stated duration make it easier to fit this specific walk in alongside other plans; you can also make the tour the main focus of an outing.

Cycling routes for different travel plans

Neu-Ulm lies along two named long-distance cycling routes. The Danube Cycle Path passes through Ulm and Neu-Ulm; the entire route is listed as 587 km long and has a four-star ADFC rating. The Iller Cycle Path runs from Ulm/Neu-Ulm via Illertissen, Memmingen and Kempten to Oberstdorf. It is listed as 146 km long and runs mostly away from road traffic.

The two routes differ in their stated overall lengths and described itineraries. If cycling is an important part of your trip, you can use this information to consider which route better suits your plans. When choosing a holiday apartment in Neu-Ulm, it is therefore helpful to decide first which experiences you have planned: museum visits, time in the parks, the 4.30 km route or a cycling trip each put a different emphasis on your stay. The information provided describes destinations and routes, not the amenities or location of individual accommodations.
