Discover Friedberg: Town History and Lake
Accommodation in Friedberg
Friedberg combines striking architecture, town history and leisure activities by the water. Friedberg is also presented as a destination for travellers following the “Romantic Road”. In the central Marienplatz stands the Historic Town Hall, with a coffered ceiling dating from the time it was built and frescoes by history painter Josef Widmann. Almost all the towers of the historic town wall are still fully preserved.
Town History and Architecture
Marienplatz is recommended as the starting point for exploring Friedberg. If you would like to learn more about the historic town wall, you can include signposted Town Walk II, which provides further information about this structure. This combines finding your way around from the central square with a closer look at the history of the fortifications.
The churches also feature a range of architectural styles. The Herrgottsruh pilgrimage church, also known as “Our Lord’s Rest”, was built from 1731 to 1753 and is considered one of the finest examples of Bavarian Rococo. The murals in the choir were created by Cosmas Damian Asam and have been fully visible again since the extensive restoration in 2007. With its red-and-white striped façade, St. Jakob’s parish church is a defining feature of Friedberg’s townscape.
Wittelsbach Castle is a four-wing complex surrounded by a moat. Fully renovated in 2019, the castle provides space for a range of public and private events; the programme may vary. Its architecture and events offer a different focus from the churches and town wall.
Museum, Guided Tours and Cultural Events
The museum in Wittelsbach Castle has dedicated sections on Friedberg faience, archaeology, including important finds from across the region, and religious art. A free audio guide is available in German, English, French and Italian; there is also a dedicated audio guide for children. As languages and media offerings may change, it is best to check what is currently available before your visit.
Friedberg Tourist Information offers themed “journeys through time” exploring the town’s history. These include tours for children, the path of water, the world of a clockmaker around 1750, the life of a maid, Friedberg as a Wittelsbach-founded town, and fortified Friedberg. The themes range from everyday life and crafts to water and town defences. There are dedicated tours for children; for the other offerings, you can choose according to your historical interests.
“Friedberger Zeit” is a recurring cultural event in Friedberg. Individual dates and programmes may change. If this event is important to your trip, check the dates for your planned stay.
Leisure at Friedberg Lake and Choosing a Holiday Apartment
Friedberg Lake has a wakeboarding facility, beach volleyball courts, sunbathing lawns, playgrounds, a swimming island, a jetty with benches, a kiosk, a restaurant, sanitary facilities, a water rescue service, and parking for cars and motorhomes. Some facilities may operate seasonally, so take this into account when planning. The mix of water sports, play areas and places to relax offers a different focus for the day from the historic sights and museum.
When choosing your holiday apartment, your preferred focus for the trip may therefore be a deciding factor: would you like to spend most of your time exploring town history, churches and guided tours, or would you rather focus more on water sports and time outdoors?
