Local History at Special Places

Around 400 of the original 420 graves have been preserved at the Jewish cemetery in Fischach; many inscriptions are still legible. The number of graves preserved and the readable inscriptions give this place a distinctive historical significance. At the parish church of “St. Michael,” you can see two more specific artistic features: stucco work by Joseph Meitinger and ceiling frescoes by Franz Martin Kuen.

Smaller places in the townscape also have stories of their own. St. Leonhard’s Chapel on Augsburger Straße is framed by two old lime trees. It was probably built in the 17th century in honour of Saint Leonhard. At the junction of Blumenstraße and Triebgasse with Hauptstraße, the Thoma lime tree commemorates Leonhard Thoma, who was born in Fischach in 1864 and went on to become an important church painter. On Buschelberg, meanwhile, the remains of one of the largest hillfort complexes in Bavarian Swabia contribute to the town’s archaeological history.

In Fischach’s hamlet of Heimberg, the Mozart House is connected with direct ancestors of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Ändris Motzhart was already living in the house associated with the Mozart House in 1486. In the municipality, at Siegertshofen, the parish church of “St. Nikolaus” contains a late Gothic Coronation of the Virgin. The Sebastian Chapel there was endowed in 1690; inside is a wooden figure of Saint Sebastian in the distinctive style of Lorenz Luidl.

Nature Park and Water

Fischach’s location in the nature park and the history of Buschelberg offer two different perspectives on the town: its setting in a protected landscape and the traces of a former hillfort complex. Fischach’s natural swimming pool offers another kind of day out. Its grounds cover 28,000 square metres, and the swimming area has a water surface of 2,400 square metres. These figures distinguish the size of the entire grounds from the water surface and help you see the pool as a destination in its own right among Fischach’s attractions.

Regional bus services connect Fischach with Gessertshausen and Augsburg, as well as with Schwabmünchen and Bobingen via Mickhausen. Two routes can be compared by length: the LandArt Bonstetten art trail is a 5.65-kilometre circular hiking route, where the artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures. The three-kilometre meditation trail runs from the Oberschönenfeld Cistercian Abbey to Weiherhof, along the edge of the forest in the Schwarzachtal valley. Their length and route type offer different points of reference for planning your trip.

The Augsburg district has a well-developed network of cycling paths. The regions of the Augsburg – Western Forests Nature Park include Stauden, Holzwinkel and Reischenau.
