Eckersdorf: Garden Art, Gorges and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Eckersdorf
The municipality of Eckersdorf offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: Fantaisie Palace Park as a designed cultural landscape, natural landmarks such as the sandstone gorge and Teufelsloch, and several named hiking trails. You can plan your visit around garden art, protected nature or specific routes. When choosing a holiday apartment, one simple question can help: would you mainly like to explore the historic park, or make hiking the focus of your trip?
Garden Art and History at Fantaisie
Fantaisie Palace and Park date back to Duchess Elisabeth Friederike Sophie (1732–1780). The park combines design elements from the Rococo, Sentimental and Historicist periods, so it cannot be reduced to a single era. The cascade is also an important part of the park’s history: it was fully restored as a water feature between 2003 and 2005.
The decision to establish a garden art museum in the palace was made in 1991; the museum opened in mid-2000. Another distinctive feature is the Spindler Cabinet at Fantaisie Palace: it is an inlaid work of art by brothers Johann Friedrich and Heinrich Wilhelm Spindler. Together, the park’s design, the museum’s history and the craftsmanship offer different facets of Eckersdorf’s cultural heritage.
Protected Nature and Teufelsloch
The sandstone gorge is designated a natural monument and receives special protection. The gorge woodland at Teufelsloch is also protected and has been designated a natural monument since 1941. If you walk upstream through Teufelsloch from below, you will reach a waterfall at the end of the gorge, after about 100 metres.
Teufelsloch also has a long history as an excursion destination: its rugged, romantic gorges made it a popular outing spot as early as the 19th century. According to entries in Cosima’s diary, Richard Wagner visited several times and stopped at the forest hut. This natural setting thus combines a specific hiking destination with a historical connection, though the two offer different kinds of discovery.
Hiking Trails with Different Routes
The Princess Friederike Trail begins at the historic Kappellenweiher pond. Its small island was once used by the nobility for coffee invitations. The trail passes Franzosenbruck and a small lake, then climbs over old sandstone steps and rock formations to Siegesturm. The tower was built in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian War.
The Teufelsloch hiking trail runs from the forest hut through Teufelsloch and back to the hut. Possible side trips include Wolfsfalle, Lettenwinkel or the Wills Monument. For a described route with approximate time and distance details, consider the Kuckucksweg (“Cuckoo Trail”), “Über die Hohe Buche”: it is about eight kilometres long and takes around two hours. The route runs from Busbach via Steinberg and Melkendorf along the woodland area known as “Die Hohe Buche,” crosses the Eschenbach towards Lochau, and returns to Busbach from there.
The blue-marked route “Durch das schöne Busbachtal zum Braunstein” (“Through the Beautiful Busbach Valley to Braunstein”) is listed as about 6.5 kilometres and roughly one hour and 45 minutes. Compared with “Über die Hohe Buche,” the estimated times are similar, while the distances and described routes differ. Kuckucksweg 2 runs through the Busbach Valley via Pfarrhügel to the Braunstein Monument, then returns to the starting point via Steinberg, with sweeping views over Busbach.
You can use these differences to help choose a holiday apartment based on the focus of your trip: Fantaisie brings together park design, history and inlaid art, while the hiking descriptions provide specific routes and, in some cases, time and distance details. This makes it easy to plan your Eckersdorf visit around what interests you most—garden art, natural landmarks or named hiking routes.
