Local history at the castle museum and in historic buildings
The Mitterfels Castle Museum is housed in the former prison wing of the former district court and later local court, a building around 200 years old. It has been located there since December 1982. In the cells of the former prison, the museum displays workshops belonging to a village blacksmith, wheelwright, shoemaker and goldsmith. There are also exhibits on rural life and farming. These themes bring different aspects of working life and everyday life in the past into focus during a museum visit.
The Hien-Sölde offers a different perspective on historic architecture: it is a late-medieval block construction on a rubble-stone base, dating back to 1436. St. George’s Church in Mitterfels was built in 1734 in the late Baroque style. Visitors interested in architectural styles and local history will find a range of historical points of interest: the workshops and areas of life presented in the museum, the block construction of the Sölde and the late-Baroque church.
A Christmas market was held on the first Sunday of Advent at Mitterfels Castle and in front of the historic St. George’s Church. Cycling around Mitterfels
The Danube-Regen cycle route runs right past Mitterfels and follows a former railway line into the Bavarian Forest. Information boards explain ecosystems and historical background and encourage visitors to be physically active.
