Karlstein a.Main has several distinct facets: the landscape history of Gustavsee, the “Dettinger Te Deum” Cultural Trail and the history of energy supply at the Energy Museum. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to consider which theme you want to shape your stay: a lake with an industrial past, a trail through Dettingen’s cultural landscape, or art and energy history. This lets you explore the area through specific interests rather than orienting your trip around a single activity.

Gustavsee: a landscape with a history

Gustavsee was formed in the mid-1920s in a former lignite mine near Großwelzheim and is now located in the municipality of Karlstein. Its origins link the lake as it exists today with the site’s former use. At the lake, there is an observation platform in the form of a seven-sided, asymmetrical steel structure. It extends just under eight metres into the embankment area. Alongside the history of the landscape, the structure’s design is a distinctive feature of Gustavsee. If this is the focus of your stay, you can combine the theme of the lake with a specific story about the area.

The Cultural Trail through Dettingen

The European Cultural Trail “Dettinger Te Deum” explores Dettingen’s cultural landscape between St. Peter and Paul Church and the Heißerackerhof. The trail is about five kilometres long, has no significant change in elevation and is marked with a yellow EU boat on a blue background. Its length, elevation profile and markings give you specific details to help with planning. The Cultural Trail is therefore a distinct way to shape your stay around a route connected to the cultural landscape.

Church art and energy history

St. Hippolyt Church offers a different cultural focus. Its choir contains the celebrant’s seat and the sacrament house—works of art that have made the church widely known. The Karlstein Energy Museum, by contrast, focuses on the history of regional energy supply and nuclear technology. It is housed in the former information centre of the Kahl Experimental Nuclear Power Plant (VAK) and offers insights into these subjects. The church and museum thus offer two clearly distinct themes for planning a holiday: sacred art and technological development.

Railway station and ferry connection

In the district of Dettingen, there is a railway station on the Frankfurt am Main–Aschaffenburg line. From the edge of the district of Großwelzheim, a ferry crosses the Main to Seligenstadt. The two connections differ in location and route: the railway station is in Dettingen, while the ferry crosses the Main from Großwelzheim. If you plan to use either connection, check the latest train services or ferry times before travelling.

Cycling and hiking ideas in the wider Aschaffenburg destination

The wider Aschaffenburg destination offers additional options for active days. The family-friendly Main Cycle Route runs through the Main Valley in the district of Aschaffenburg and is well signposted. In the eastern Hochspessart, four challenging cross-country routes are signposted as Bikewald-Spessart routes. This distinguishes a cycle route classed as family-friendly from challenging mountain bike trails.

There are also different ways to explore on foot: Spessart Trails 1, 2 and 3 pass through the district and have already received the “Wanderbares Deutschland” quality trail award four times. The Eselsweg is a multi-day hike. The district also has more than 30 hiking routes along the cultural trails of the Archaeological Spessart Project. If you include these regional routes in your travel plans, check the current trail conditions locally.
