The Catholic Parish Church of St. Martin is an unrendered building made of tuff blocks. Its features include a hall, a set-back chancel and a northern tower with a pointed spire. The church bears the date 1477 and was remodelled around 1720/30. Its medieval origins and later alterations make it an illustrative starting point for seeing different periods of local history side by side.

The rectory and the Adler inn are also part of the historic ensemble. The rectory at Kirchstraße 11 is a two-storey building with a hipped roof and a moulded wooden eaves cornice, dating from around 1780. Together with the church and the Adler inn, the historic rectory forms a harmonious ensemble. The Golden Eagle Inn is located at Kirchstraße 14. The architectural history of Unteregg can thus be traced through several different types of buildings, rather than being limited to the church alone.

Local traditions are also part of the village’s character. The Unteregg-Oberegg brass band has almost 50 active musicians and shapes cultural life. For many years, the Maibaumfreunde have been known for imaginatively decorated maypoles, which have often received top awards. Music and maypole traditions show two different sides of local cultural life.

Trails and Landscape in the Municipality

In the municipality, the Rund um den Drei-Länder-Stein hiking trail covers 16 km through woods and fields. Explanatory signs stand beside the three-sided boundary marker. The Drei-Länder-Stein itself is a historic red-marble boundary stone dating from 1791. It lies in the woods by the lower Schwarzenbach stream, in the Warmisried/Bayersried area. The route and the boundary stone give an excursion a historical context; be sure to take the main trail’s 16 km into account when planning your day.

The Crescentia Pilgrimage Route is on a different scale: this circular route, about 90 km long, leads from Kaufbeuren via Mindelheim and Ottobeuren back to its starting point and passes directly through Oberegg. For your holiday planning, this is a longer pilgrimage route to consider, while the Rund um den Drei-Länder-Stein trail offers a shorter route within the municipality. Duration and difficulty cannot be inferred from the distances alone.

The Teufelsküche geotope in the valley of the eastern Günz shapes the landscape in the surrounding area. Large, wild-looking piles of solidified glacial-period gravel blocks characterise this place. The Teufelsküche is designated a natural monument; visitors should stay on the paths. The Katzbrui Mill is an agricultural grain mill dating from the 17th century. For the walk there, the municipality recommends starting in Unteregg. Alternatively, you can drive to the car park and walk the last 100 metres. This specific route recommendation helps you decide whether to plan your visit as a walk from Unteregg or with a shorter walk at the end.

The historic old town of Mindelheim is also nearby, including a town hall remodelled in the Historicist style in 1897. In the municipality, St. Ulrich’s Church, dating from around 1500, together with the rectory and community centre, forms the village centre.
