The Stötten Moor in the Geltnach Valley and the 1,055 m-high Auerberg shape Stötten a.Auerberg and its immediate surroundings. The Moos Experience Trail on the western edge of the village offers a special way to get to know the moorland landscape. There are also hiking trails through the Geltnach Valley and the parish church of St. Peter and Paul, with art spanning several centuries. This allows you to tailor your stay to what interests you most: nature, activity or culture.

Experience the Moor Actively
The Moos Experience Trail leads into the Stötten Moos and offers a glimpse of a largely unknown moorland landscape. Its 13 experience stations focus on sensory awareness, movement and meditation. They invite visitors to take part actively and playfully, making the route more than just a walk through the landscape. Families who enjoy exploring together can make the stations the focus of an outing; which ones appeal most depends on the interests of those travelling together.
The starting point is in the village centre at Kirchplatz. There is parking and an inn there. This is useful if you want to plan the trail specifically as part of your stay: you will know where the trail begins and which part of the village to use as your reference point.
Hiking in the Geltnach Valley
You can also hike along well-marked trails through the Geltnach Valley from Stötten a.Auerberg, independently of the Moos Experience Trail. The Stötten Moor and Auerberg give the surrounding landscape its distinctive character. When choosing a focus for your holiday, there is a simple distinction: if you are looking for a specific experience with stations, you can follow the Moos Experience Trail; if you prefer to explore on foot, there are trails through the Geltnach Valley.
Together with ten other municipalities, Stötten published the “Auerbergland Experience Trails” cycling and hiking map. It includes cycling and hiking routes in the region as well as sights along the way. The map thus extends the focus beyond an individual walk to routes and destinations throughout the region. If you like to plan your days with a map, you can use its information alongside the moor trail as an additional guide to cycling and hiking.
Ecclesiastical Art and a Local Legend
The parish church of St. Peter and Paul is a historic building that showcases art from many centuries. The church was enlarged in 1780. Joseph Keller of Pfronten decorated it with a large ceiling fresco in a style that bridges Rococo and Classicism. There is also a Crucifixion group dating from 1525 at the altar. These different artistic references give visitors interested in culture a specific reason to explore the history and design of the village.
Another kind of discovery links the surrounding area with a local legend: Bodenloser See lies between Stötten a.Auerberg and Steinbach, on the southern side of Auerberg. According to tradition, a monster guards a vast treasure deep below the surface. This tale is part of the legends of the local area and offers a distinct point of interest alongside the moorland, hiking trails and church art.
