The Danube sinkhole and walking routes

In the Tuttlingen district, the Danube sinkhole between Immendingen, Möhringen, Tuttlingen and Fridingen changes from day to day. At times, the Danube carries a lot of water there; at various points, its bed is completely dry or carries only a little water. Another way to experience the area along a clearly defined route is the “Donauversinkung” premium hiking trail, part of the DonauWellen trails. It runs between Tuttlingen-Möhringen and Immendingen. Another route takes you directly to Tuttlingen along the final section of the Albsteig: the trail passes over Rußberg, Bettelmannskeller and Nonnehöhle near Wurmlingen.

Tuttlingen-Nendingen is also home to the two-kilometre-long “Rock & Roll Tour”, a largely barrier-free walking and hiking route that is fully wheelchair accessible. Landscapes in the Tuttlingen district

The Tuttlingen district covers 734.4 square kilometres. It includes the southwestern foothills of the Swabian Alb, parts of the Baar and the valley of the young Danube. The northern part is home to juniper heaths and the region known as the 10-Tausender, with ten mountains over 1,000 metres high. Among the district’s scenic highlights are the Danube gorge and the Höwenegg volcanic crater. White limestone cliffs rise above the Danube Valley.

The Mühlheim rock cave also has a special distinction: in October 2022, the UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb designated it the first cave on the Swabian Alb to become a Geopoint. These examples illustrate the different landscapes and geological features found within the district, and should not be confused with the city’s attractions.

Cultural destinations in the Tuttlingen district

The Neuhausen ob Eck open-air museum features 25 historic buildings. They were dismantled at their original locations, moved to the museum and restored to their original condition. In Fridingen, the upper floors of the Scharf Eck Artists’ House house a museum about Hans Bucher, the painter of the Danube Valley. His life and work are presented across three floors. The Upper Danube Valley Museum in Ifflinger Castle combines temporary exhibitions with permanent exhibitions on the history of the town and its rulers, archaeology, carnival and more recent history. In Tuttlingen, the Honberg-Sommer festival takes place every year in the ruins of Honberg Castle and attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually. Activities and regional differences

Arena Geisingen offers a 30,000-square-metre outdoor area with a road course, beer garden, slacklining, a beach volleyball court and other facilities. Opening hours may vary; check them before your visit. At Rabenfels in the Bäratal valley, the climbing areas between the routes “Mister Wendl” and “Gebrüderweg” are open from 1 August to 31 December. Mühlheim an der Donau is part of the Upper Danube Nature Park and lies directly on the International Danube Cycle Path. The route continues to the Danube’s mouth at the Black Sea and can also be ridden in short stages. These stages offer a different approach to travel than the museums, scenic spots and individual hiking trails mentioned above: the focus here is on a longer cycling route that can be divided into shorter sections.
