Castle history and architectural heritage

One of Württemberg’s most imposing castles once stood on Hohenlupfen near Talheim. It was destroyed by the Imperial City of Rottweil. Since 1911, an observation tower belonging to the Swabian Alb Association has stood on the summit. From the top floor, at an elevation of 1,000 metres, the panoramic views extend to the Swabian Alb, the Black Forest and Lake Constance; in favourable weather, they reach as far as the Alps. The castle and the tower thus tell two different chapters of the same summit’s story: an earlier castle and a viewpoint that has been there since the early 20th century.

Distinctive houses add a different touch to the town. The Ochsenbeckenhaus is an elaborately decorated half-timbered house in the Renaissance style. The Alte Schmiede is a craftsman’s house with log walls. Both descriptions invite you to look at Talheim’s architecture as well as its landscape. Max Schneckenburger, poet of “Die Wacht am Rhein”, was born in 1819 in the Schneckenburgerhaus in Talheim. The museum is no longer operating; the house’s connection to his birth remains part of the town’s history.

Lupfen and protected natural areas

Lupfen also shapes the natural landscape around Talheim. The Lupfen Nature Reserve near Talheim covers 101 hectares. Its many threatened biotopes provide a habitat for numerous animal and plant species, including species that are highly endangered. The nature reserve was established in 2024. Its size and the protection of its biotopes give the area a distinct character, showing that nature here is more than just a viewpoint or a summit.

Parts of the Lupfen Landscape Protection Area, as well as parts of an FFH area and the Baar Bird Protection Area, also lie within the boundaries of Talheim. These designations indicate further protected areas within Talheim. It is important to note that the areas concerned are only parts of these protected areas: they do not lie entirely within the boundaries of Talheim.

A Donaubikeland cycling route passes through Talheim along Öfingerstraße, Tuttlinger Straße and Vogtenstraße. It is a good idea to check current route conditions before setting off.
