Hettingen in the Lauchert Valley
The Hettingen district lies in the Lauchert Valley, the “Blue Ribbon of the Swabian Alb,” directly on the Hohenzollern Route and the Danube-Zollernalb Trail. This location gives the town a clear connection to both the landscape and local routes. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether this setting suits the trip you have in mind; the historic buildings and museum offer their own cultural highlights.
Church, castle complex and palace
The parish church in Hettingen is a Late Gothic building. It was dedicated to St Martin in 1401 and elevated to a collegiate church in 1503 through a foundation by Hans Kaspar von Bubenhofen. These dates mark two stages in its history: its dedication and its later elevation to collegiate status. The church thus tells its own part of the town’s history, alongside the developments at the palace.
Of the medieval castle complex of the Counts of Gammertingen-Hettingen, the tall shield wall on the north side of Hettingen Palace remains. The residential building was newly constructed around 1720 by Franz-Anton von Speth, incorporating a medieval keep and a Romanesque castle gate into the new building. Different eras therefore coexist in a single structure: the medieval origins of the castle complex and the later redesign of the residential building.
The palace’s interior features also reflect several historical influences. A three-flight wooden staircase dating from the time of construction leads to the upper floors, with heraldic figures on its posts. Stucco ceilings display landscapes and allegorical scenes within richly ornamented frames. Some ceilings feature stucco work from the Rococo period, around 1770. Together, the staircase, figures and ceiling motifs offer a layered picture of the building’s history and decoration.
Carnival from European and regional perspectives
The Narrenburg Carnival Museum is devoted to European carnival traditions across approximately 400 square metres. It explores the background and cultural context of Fastnacht, Fasching and carnival. The exhibits are spread across two floors and use modern presentation methods. Alongside a wide variety of carnival customs and forms of representation from across Europe, the museum also presents the regional carnival of the Alb-Lauchert Ring. The subject ranges from diverse forms of expression to their cultural context. Unlike the history of the church and palace, the focus here is not the development of a building, but carnival as a festive phenomenon.
A distinctive highlight within the wider Sigmaringen destination
The wider Sigmaringen destination also offers its own attractions. Sigmaringen Palace developed from a medieval castle into a princely residence and is considered a landmark of the town. The palace houses a private collection of around 3,000 weapons. For nature lovers and hikers, the five Sigmaringen premium hiking trails, the DonauFelsenLäufe, lead through the Danube Valley, the Schmeien Valley and the Lauchert Valley. These palace and hiking attractions belong to the wider Sigmaringen destination; Hettingen’s own highlights remain its architectural history and the Carnival Museum.
