Historic Routes and the Town Layout
Historic Route 1 is about 1 kilometre long. It begins at Speth’s Town Palace, now the town hall, and follows clearly signposted paths through the historic old town. Along the way, you will encounter remnants of the town wall and moat. The route combines a manageable stroll with a glimpse of the town’s former fortifications. A second option offers a different focus: Historic Route 2 starts at the Old Brewery, is about 3 kilometres long and leads to sights outside the historic town centre. The approximate route lengths and different destinations help you choose which walk to take.
The shape of the old town centre also tells the story of Gammertingen. The town was laid out in the 12th or 13th century on flood-free tufa terraces west of the Lauchert. The rectangular area, measuring 175 × 200 metres and originally completely enclosed by a town wall, is still recognisable today. Another historic detail can be found in today’s town hall: the former Speth’s Town Palace was built in 1775 in the Neoclassical style on the site of an earlier 13th-century palace. The building thus brings together present-day municipal use and several layers of history.
Museum and Changing Exhibitions
The Museum in the Old District Office is dedicated to the history of Gammertingen and the region. It collects and researches this history, presenting it anew in changing exhibitions. The museum is on the second floor of the historic Old District Office, built in 1724/25. A working group organises two to three exhibitions a year in its rooms. If you are interested in culture and local history, you can make the museum a focus of your stay; the historic routes offer a different perspective on the town.
Lauchert Valley, Relaxation and Activities
The Lauchert Valley and its adjoining high plateaus of the Swabian Alb are a popular local recreation area, thanks to their extensive forests and healthy, invigorating climate. For those interested in nature and relaxation, there is also a Kneipp facility on the Lauchert between the main town of Gammertingen and the district of Bronnen. It has been in existence for over 80 years, has been completely renovated and expanded with additional leisure and relaxation facilities. As a result, the municipality offers opportunities focused on relaxation as well as historic attractions.
There are five newly laid cross-country ski trails in Gammertingen’s outlying districts, with a combined length of just under 23 kilometres. They can be used when snow conditions permit and are suitable for both classic and skating techniques. Snow conditions are an important consideration when planning your trip: the trails are not available regardless of the conditions. The details on their number, total length and skiing techniques also help distinguish this offering from the historic walking routes.
The City of Gammertingen’s trekking camp is located in the natural surroundings of the Fehlatal Valley. It is open from May to October, and bookings can only be made online. The camp adds a nature-based stay to the range of options in the municipality.
