In Neresheim, significant abbey culture meets trails with very different focuses. The abbey church is a cultural heritage site of European standing and an outstanding attraction. There is also the monastery museum, with its history of architecture and education, a walking trail around the abbey, and a Way of St. James that begins in Neresheim. When planning your trip, it is worth considering in advance whether you would like to focus on culture, pilgrimage traditions, walks or the history of the Härtsfeld Railway.

Abbey Church and Monastery Museum

The monastery museum provides an overview of the monastery’s history and architectural history across three floors of the convent building and the prelature. It also explores the abbey’s historical significance for the natural sciences, education and art. The museum also includes the largely preserved collection of scientific teaching aids from the former monastery grammar school. If you are interested in the history of knowledge and teaching, you will find a distinct perspective on the abbey here, extending beyond its architectural history.

The tour ends with a visit to the ballroom, whose stucco images were created by Dominikus Zimmermann. Bear in mind the special visiting arrangements when planning your trip: the rooms of the monastery museum can only be visited with a knowledgeable guide. Tours for individuals and groups are held only by prior arrangement with the monastery administration. This is important if the museum is to be a central part of your stay.

Pilgrimage Route and Walks

Another Way of St. James begins in Neresheim and leads pilgrims via Tübingen onward to France. A scallop-shell symbol serves as a waymarker. Shell signs can be found, for example, in the car park in front of the monastery, at the start of Klosterallee near the “Old Railway Station,” in the “Zwing” nature reserve, and to the west, on the Tourist Information building at Hauptstraße 21. These landmarks help you recognize the route’s markers in Neresheim; the Way of St. James thus offers a different way to experience the town than a tour of the monastery rooms.

The Baroque Trail is one option for a walk around the abbey. Another is the path to the Härtsfeld Museum Railway: it runs from Neresheim station to Dischingen station, is not a circular route, and is also part of the cycle path. If you include this route in your day’s plans, bear in mind that it runs between two stations rather than ending where it starts. The pilgrimage route, circular trail and connecting path offer different ways to find your way around and get moving.

Härtsfeld Railway and Nature

The railway is also part of Neresheim’s history. The operating center of the historic Härtsfeld Railway, the “Centralstation,” was located right at the foot of Ulrichsberg. The Härtsfeld Railway Museum opened at Neresheim station. Museum railway services on the Neresheim–Sägmühle route began in October 2001; there, you can experience what it was like in the past. If you are interested in regional transport history, these sites add a different historical focus to your exploration of the abbey.

A nature-related attraction lies near the destination: at the old lime works near Neresheim in the Egau Valley, there is a bee education trail, a wild bee station and a newly established bee garden. So when choosing the focus of your holiday, you can consider bees and their habitat alongside the history of the monastery, pilgrimage and railway.

For families with different interests, this selection offers a range of topics to choose from together, without having to plan your stay around a single activity.
