The Haus Kickelhain is an unusual example of a home: with a footprint of 26 square metres, it is one of the smallest detached half-timbered houses in Germany. Inside, traditional farmhouse furniture offers a glimpse of Odenwald domestic culture in the 18th and 19th centuries. Anyone interested in architecture and everyday life in the past will find a striking contrast here to the city’s larger historic buildings.

Mosbach’s architectural history also includes the Gutleut complex in the eastern part of the city. It comprises the Gutleuthaus, the Elendhaus and the Gutleut Chapel. Its cohesive character and preserved original features make it one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in Baden-Württemberg. The old town itself is defined by its splendid half-timbered houses.

The Mosbach City Museum offers insights into city and regional history in five buildings around the Hospitalhof. Topics include faience and majolica, the history of the Jewish community in Mosbach, crafts and guilds, the folklore of displaced people, and the history of printing, known as the “black art.” For families who enjoy exploring a range of interests, the variety of themes offers several points of entry.

The Druckwerkstatt Mosbach e.V. also offers a hands-on creative experience at the city museum. Under the motto “Bright and handmade,” printmaking activities are available for groups of 4 to 12 people. During the several-hour printmaking sessions for children, they can create their own colourful prints. The activities are used mainly by schools, kindergartens and birthday groups.

Hikes for different ability levels

The Jupiter Trail is a 7.3-kilometre, moderately challenging hike. It starts in the museum courtyard in Mosbach’s historic old town. In the city forest, sights along the route include the faithful stone replica of the Leugenstein milestone and the Jupiter Bench; here, the trail follows easily accessible forest tracks. With its starting point and route, this tour offers a way to take in both the old town and the city forest on one outing.

Another hiking option is the M2 Hornberg Trail, which starts at Franz-Roser-Platz and leads about 7 kilometres to Hornberg Castle. The castle can be visited. The M6 Hamberg–Dreibrunnenwiese circular trail is about 14 kilometres long, takes 3.5 to 4 hours and is suitable for experienced hikers. If you’d rather follow the water, consider the Elzufer Trail. It starts at the Bleiche in Mosbach and runs about 9 kilometres to the centre of Neckarzimmern. The trail is also designated as a cycle touring route. Mosbach is also the starting point of the 225-kilometre 3-Länder cycle route, which passes through the tri-state region of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Hesse.

Green spaces and getting your bearings

The 19-hectare city park adjoins the old town. A continuous network of paths connects the park, where you can also experience the restored Elz stream. This adds a green setting to the historic sights, without requiring you to commit to a long hiking route. Around 120 kilometres of marked hiking trails lead through the natural landscape of the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park around Mosbach.

Mosbach/Baden station has an S-Bahn connection. It is just a few steps from the city centre and directly connected to the pedestrian zone in the historic old town. This is a useful landmark when planning your accommodation and routes into the city centre.
