Kreuzwertheim brings together river scenery, nature and local history in a variety of ways. North of the old town lies a large orchard area, the surrounding area is ideal for hiking and cycling, and the town center features historic buildings from several centuries. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your stay around the experiences that matter most to you: nature and outdoor activities, or a stronger focus on cultural history.

Orchards and nature north of the old town

The 45-hectare Erlichgärten stretch directly north of Kreuzwertheim’s old town. This orchard area is part of the European Fauna-Flora-Habitat site “Maintalhänge zwischen Bürgstadt und Wertheim” (Main Valley Slopes between Bürgstadt and Wertheim). More than 50 rare and endangered bird and beetle species have been recorded in the Erlichgärten. This gives the landscape a distinctive natural-history dimension that adds its own character to a trip alongside the historic sights.

Hiking from different perspectives

The circular hiking trail “Auf dem Weg ins Himmelreich” (On the Way to Heaven) runs from Wertheim through Kreuzwertheim and Himmelreich, then back to Wertheim. The route is listed as taking about three hours; it is rated easy and marked with a “Black H” and “W4.” The estimated duration can help you plan your day, while trail conditions and markings on site may also be relevant. Check them before setting off.

The Main Hiking Trail also offers a different connection to the region: its final stage ends in Kreuzwertheim, on the border with Baden-Württemberg. Hikes around the town also take in the river scenery along the Main, Kreuzwertheim’s Himmelreich and the Kaffelstein wine-growing area as landscapes and destinations for excursions.

Explore by bike or on the water

There is a cycle path along the Main for bike rides. More challenging tours are also available between the Spessart forests and vineyards. Less experienced cyclists may find e-bikes a suitable option in particular. There is an e-bike charging station in Kreuzwertheim, directly on the Main Cycle Route; you can check its current availability before setting out.

If you would rather explore the river from the water, you can rent a canoe or kayak near Kreuzwertheim. Rental services offer another way to experience the surrounding area. Check availability in advance if you plan to make this activity a fixed part of your trip.

The church square and architectural history

A stone wayside cross stands in the historic church square. It is considered a local landmark and is associated with the beginnings of Christianization in the southeastern Spessart. The square is also home to a Romanesque church dating from 1443. Another notable building is the Peter-Herrschaft-Haus, built in 1594: the Renaissance building has a stepped gable, and a winery has operated there ever since.

A stroll through the town center will also take you past the castle, which dates from 1736. It remains a residence and is not open for visitor tours. You can view the buildings from the outside on a walk, while their different dates make the town’s long history visible.

Everyday life at the Prassek Scheune

The Prassek Scheune is a local history and crafts museum housed in an 18th-century barn. A total of nine open rooms and sections display aspects and objects of rural everyday life: the kitchen and living room sit alongside a shoemaker’s workshop, a school and farming exhibits. The different themes offer insights into a range of living and working environments, complementing the town’s architectural history with everyday culture.
