Aftersteg: Waterfall, Chapel and Silver Mining
Accommodation in Aftersteg
Aftersteg can be explored through three distinct themes: the chapel, the history of silver mining and the waterfall landscape. St. Anne's Chapel was built in 1909 in the Neo-Romanesque style with a tower. The Todtnau Waterfall is located between Todtnau and Aftersteg, as well as between Todtnauberg and Aftersteg.
The Todtnau Waterfall
The waterfall plunges down in several stages over a distance of more than 60 metres. Its total drop is 97 metres, spread over two stages; it is considered Baden-Württemberg's highest natural waterfall. It is accessible without barriers from Aftersteg. Access conditions may vary, so check the situation on site before your visit.
If the waterfall is important to your travel plans, Aftersteg offers a specific local connection: it is accessible without barriers from here. You can take this into account when looking for a holiday apartment, while also checking the conditions on site before your visit.
Chapel, mining and the valley's history
St. Anne's Chapel is a clearly dated architectural landmark: it was built in 1909 in the Neo-Romanesque style with a tower. Silver mining took place in the Aftersteg area from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. A specific year of construction and a mining activity spanning a long period thus offer two distinct ways to explore the area's history.
Historically, Aftersteg was described as a health resort away from through traffic. Buildings were scattered across the valley and both slopes of the Schönenbach Valley. The Schönenbach Valley is a right-hand side valley of the Große Wiese. This description links the area's history with the shape of the valley and its slopes.
A Kneipp facility in Aftersteg
The Aftersteg water-treading pool is a Kneipp facility at Talstraße 25, 79674 Todtnau. If you would like to include it in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently open for use. It is another possible point of interest for your travel plans, alongside the waterfall, chapel and mining history.
Todtnau: Nature, Activities and Culture
Todtnau is located in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park and the Black Forest Biosphere Reserve, between Feldberg and Belchen in the upper Wiesental valley. Todtnau has hiking, cycling and mountain biking routes of varying difficulty, with views of the Black Forest. At the entrance to Todtnauberg, the 450-metre-long BLACKFORESTLINE spans the Todtnau Waterfall. The bridge is around 120 metres above the waterfall and is supported by 76-millimetre steel cables and 16-metre pylons.
The Todtnau Brush Museum dedicates its permanent exhibition to the life and work of Karl Ludwig Nessler. The museum also presents the history of Todtnau's brush industry from 1770 to the present day. The mountain huts at Stübenwasen, Gisiboden and Hasenhorn invite you to stop for a snack. There are also designated sledding areas in Todtnauberg.
When looking for a holiday apartment, your preferred travel focus is a helpful point of comparison: Aftersteg offers a chapel, mining history and the waterfall, which is accessible without barriers from there. Todtnau adds routes, a museum, mountain huts and sledding opportunities to the options. This lets you choose a location based on the experiences that are especially interesting to you.
