Baitenhausen combines Baroque pilgrimage history with paths through vineyards and orchards, scenic views and vivid insights into beekeeping. Anyone planning a trip where culture and physical activity go hand in hand will find several different points of interest here: the pilgrimage church on Schlossberg hill, hiking trails with clearly described routes and the educational apiary with its Blossom Trail.

Pilgrimage Church and Baroque Art

The pilgrimage church of Maria zum Berg Karmel is located above Baitenhausen, a district of Meersburg. It was consecrated in 1704; from its location, the view extends across the Salem Valley to Heiligenberg Castle and the Gehrenberg. The traditional pilgrimage days are St. Wendelin’s Day on October 20 and the Scapular Festival on the Sunday around July 16. These dates give your trip a special historical and religious connection if you would like to visit Baitenhausen on these occasions.

The Baroque chapel on Schlossberg hill was also built in 1702 by chaplain J. G. Rodt for a pilgrimage that had already existed since the late Middle Ages. The pilgrimage church’s high altar contains a Gothic devotional image. The ceiling paintings are by J. W. Baumgartner. Baitenhausen therefore offers not only a viewpoint, but also specific details of art and architectural history that can be deliberately explored on a cultural walk.

Hiking with Scenic Views and Defined Waypoints

Hiking Trail 5 leads from Grasbeuren via Schiggendorf and the Baitenhausen pilgrimage chapel to Mühlhofen and back to Grasbeuren. Another described circular hike around the villages north of Meersburg leads from Meersburg to the Baroque chapel in Baitenhausen. It is 11 km long, takes about 3 hours and includes 170 metres of ascent. The route passes through vineyards and orchards and offers views of the Salem Valley, Lake Constance and the Alps. At the thermal borehole site, this circular hike joins the Way of St. James.

For orientation directly in the village, the route from the village centre is also interesting: The circular hiking trail follows Kirchweg past the cemetery and reaches the Baitenhausen pilgrimage church on Schlossberg hill after 95 steps. If you are coordinating your daily plans with children or several generations, these steps, along with the 11 kilometres and 170 metres of ascent, can be taken into account deliberately without confusing the different routes.

Blossom Trail, Bees and a Bike Tour

A signposted Blossom Trail was created in 2008 in the meadow adjoining the Baitenhausen educational apiary. At the educational apiary, the history of beekeeping is presented using historic beehives and occupied observation hives. This complements the church and hiking experiences with a vivid nature-related theme: You can explore the development of beekeeping and then include the Blossom Trail in your plans.

Baitenhausen can also be incorporated into a longer tour by bicycle. The bike tour Scenic Bike Tour through Beautiful Natural Landscapes climbs uphill to Baitenhausen and reaches the chapel via a signposted spur trail. On its forest section, it also passes the Bee Nature Trail. Depending on whether you prefer a cultural walk, a hike or a bike tour, this creates different focal points for your stay.

Which Type of Stay Suits You?

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house in Baitenhausen, you can use your preferred daily rhythm as a starting point. For travellers interested in culture, the pilgrimage church, chapel, devotional image and ceiling paintings are the main attractions. Those who prefer longer routes can plan the 11-km circular hike, which takes about 3 hours and includes 170 metres of ascent. Nature and beekeeping enthusiasts will find their own focal points at the educational apiary, on the Blossom Trail and along the bike tour. This means that your choice of accommodation is not determined by general promises, but by the experiences that are intended to shape your trip.
