Churches with their own stories
The Alte Kirche was built as a Catholic place of worship in 1839. Another landmark in the town’s history is St. Verena Church, built between 1971 and 1974. Inside, there is a Stations of the Cross made of glazed clay, featuring high and low relief. The works are by Polish artist Jacek Suidiczinsky and were given to the church in 1994. The architecture and artwork offer two different reasons to explore the churches in Volkertshausen.
In 1993, following the founding of an art association in Volkertshausen, a former church was provisionally prepared for its first concerts and exhibitions. Regular events organised by local associations are held at the Alte Kirche cultural and civic centre. It is worth keeping an eye on the dates when planning your visit; the historic first concerts and exhibitions should be distinguished from the events held regularly today.
A destination for culture and cycling
A useful landmark is the playground by the Alte Kirche. It is directly behind the church’s car parks and can be reached via the Friedenstraße entrance. This makes it possible to include a specific place near the Alte Kirche while taking in local life.
Volkertshausen lies along the Radolfzeller Aach. The Engen–Eigeltingen–Langenstein–Volkertshausen–Engen cycling tour also passes through the town. Check route conditions before setting off. If cycling is an important part of your stay, this tour is a helpful reference when planning your trip.
