Buildings from Different Eras

The Old Tower stands on a rise near the castle. A remnant of a fortified church dating from the 12th or 13th century, it is considered Gondelsheim’s oldest building. Its history reaches back to a much earlier period than the castle’s, offering a tangible point of reference for the town’s history.

Gondelsheim Castle was built in the Anglo-Scottish style from 1857 to 1861; Art Nouveau wings were added in 1906. These two dates point to different phases of construction. The Nymph Fountain offers another facet of public art: it is a replica of Walter Schott’s original “Three Dancing Girls” from 1903. The tower, castle and fountain thus represent different ways of approaching the town’s history and design.

Planetary Trail and Observatory

The 2 km planetary trail runs through the Gondelsheim district to the observatory. Ten signs mounted on posts show the planets from the Sun to Pluto at a scale of 1:4 billion and illustrate their relative sizes. The fixed scale is key to the theme: it turns the planets into a series of comparable models and gives the trail an astronomical focus.

There’s a fitting theme at night, too: the “Kraichgau-Sternwarte Gondelsheim” association regularly offers night-time “sky excursions” for interested visitors. The planetary trail and sky excursions offer different experiences: one uses scale-model signs, while the other takes the form of a night-time excursion.

The Riedwiesenweg is about 8.5 km long, and the Karrheckenweg about 9 km. Both lead through Gondelsheim’s cultural landscape and offer insights into local history. Their approximate lengths allow for a rough comparison: the Riedwiesenweg is a little shorter. A signposted historical trail offers a different approach, linking landmarks from Gondelsheim’s history.

The hedgerow educational trail supports nature conservation and environmental education. Several hundred metres along the trail have been planted with native shrubs, wild roses and vegetation typical of the site, and furnished with explanatory signs. This trail focuses on plantings and information, while the two longer routes connect cultural landscapes with local history.

Since 2008, a landscape conservation area covering more than 22 hectares in Gondelsheim has protected a diverse section of the historically shaped Kraichgau landscape. Its habitats include wet woodland, fallow meadows with reed beds, tall-sedge marsh, ditches and ponds, as well as traditional orchards and hedgerows. These varied habitats complement the planned plantings along the hedgerow educational trail with a broader perspective on the landscape.
