Wittendorf combines a long local history with concrete experiences involving the museum, hiking trail, cycling tour and winter sports. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Wittendorf, you can plan your stay according to whether you want to focus on historical insights, activity in the landscape or seasonal activities.

History and Village Life in the Granary

Wittendorf’s history includes weapon graves from the 6th and 7th centuries as well as its first documented mention around 1100. This span of time makes the village interesting for travellers who are not only looking for nature experiences but also want to gain an impression of its past.

A suitable place to start is the local heritage museum in the granary. It is located in a historic building that formerly belonged to Alpirsbach Monastery. The museum displays pictures and objects from village life. It also offers changing special exhibitions on new topics each year. Those who value culture when planning their trip will therefore find an independent focus here alongside outdoor activities.

Hiking with Views and a Clearly Marked Route

The “Wittendorfer Kornäcker” hike begins at the car park by the Wittendorf sports field. From there, it follows the yellow diamond trail marker towards Neuneck. After around 500 m, the hike reaches a play and barbecue area beneath the lime tree. The lime tree also marks the highest point of the loop. A bench by the tree offers a 360-degree view.

This makes the hike easy to plan as a separate part of the day: the route combines a marked trail with a viewpoint and a place to take a break. When planning, bear in mind that the distance of around 500 m refers to the section up to the play and barbecue area, not the total length of the loop.

Cycling Uphill to Wittendorf

There is also a specific route through the village for a cycling tour. The NPe5 eBike Tour 5 “Around the Loßburg Holiday Region” leads uphill from Ursental to Wittendorf and onwards into the Heimbach Valley. Unlike the hike, the focus here is on the ascent to Wittendorf followed by the continuation into the Heimbach Valley. If you would like to combine different interests, you can consider which activity should define your holiday when choosing your accommodation, without combining the individual offerings into a single route.

Käppele–Wittendorf Winter Sports Area

During the cold season, the Käppele–Wittendorf winter sports area, at elevations between 562 and 627 m, is one of the local destinations for winter sports. The Wittendorf ski lift is a 400 m-long platter lift with a carrying capacity of 600 people per hour.

You should not currently plan another activity: recreational fishing at Hubertussee is closed with immediate effect and until further notice due to the currently low water level. For planning your trip, it is therefore advisable to focus on the museum, hike, cycling tour or winter sports and to take the respective season into account.

Choose the Right Accommodation for Your Travel Interests

Wittendorf is suitable for planning a trip in which different experiences can be compared: local history and village life versus the marked hiking trail, the eBike tour and winter sports. You can therefore choose a holiday apartment or holiday home according to which of these focuses is particularly important for your days in Wittendorf.

To the overarching travel overview: Loßburg.
