History
La Table combines distinctive evidence of the past with paths through the countryside. The fortified maison-forte de l’Huille dates back to the 12th century. The Château de l’Hüille was built to control the Roman road; its ruins stand on a limestone rock above the plain. The castle once watched over the important road along which travellers headed towards Maurienne.
In 1689, two side chapels were added to the Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in order to enlarge the church building. After it was destroyed during the French Revolution, the church was rebuilt in 1865 on a considerably larger scale.
Fifty-seven graves have been identified in the former cemetery behind the church. Among other features, upright steles, horizontal grave slabs and heart-shaped memorial markers can be seen there. La Table is also home to Sylvain Dautremay, who mainly creates animal figures as chainsaw sculptures. His studio can be visited.
Nature and Trails
Le Tour de la Table is a short hike exploring former trade routes. The route is 4.7 km long, involves 240 metres of ascent and takes approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes. It starts at the car park of the Gîtes ruraux in the hamlet of Villard de la Table and is marked with yellow trail signs.
The path to the starting point of Le Grand Chat leads south from the Col du Champet along the Mollards ridge trail. It offers a 360-degree view of La Lauzière, Les Bauges and La Chartreuse. The ascent involves 450 metres of elevation gain and takes approximately one hour on foot.
Climbing
Six routes at the end of the Table Climbing Site are not equipped for lead climbing and must be set from above. The Table Climbing Site climbing sector has 10 routes on a 20- to 25-metre-high gneiss wall; the grades range from 3a to 6c+.
Astronomy
The 1.3-km-long educational trail exploring the solar system includes 13 informative, playful and illustrated panels extending from the Sun to beyond Pluto. The distances between the panels are arranged proportionally to the distances in our solar system. The astronomy section of the Foyer pour tous, which created the educational trail, regularly organises events for children and adults.
