The parish church of Saint-Maurice in Épersy was rebuilt between 1862 and 1864 by the contractor Jean Buffet from Saint-Félix (Haute-Savoie), based on plans by the diocesan architect Joseph Samuel Revel from Chambéry. The neo-Gothic church has a Latin cross-shaped floor plan. Its portal has a pointed arch, continuous profiles, and a tympanum with coloured glass.
History and Culture
Historical names for Épersy include Spartiacum in the 11th century, Spartziacum in the 12th century, and Epersiacum in the 17th century. The origins of Épersy probably date back to Roman times.
The Lavoir du Novelet, also called “source des oiseaux”, is a small pond-like area bordered by obliquely positioned stone slabs.
Village Character
The Croix Durand stands at the edge of the Route du Chef-lieu on a square two-level platform. It bears the year 1878. According to oral tradition, it was erected by conscripts from the War of 1870 in gratitude for their safe return.
Landscape and Agriculture
Épersy is bordered to the southeast first by the course of the Monderesse and then by the Sierroz, into which the Monderesse flows.
In the 17th and 19th centuries, Épersy was described as a well-managed landscape with wheat, rye, and oats, as well as cattle and sheep farming. The various fruits described for Épersy during these centuries included walnuts and chestnuts.
