History

The Mémorial de Thel is a particularly historic site in Thel. During the Second World War, the Maquis de Chauffailles established itself in the heights of Chèvrelus. The bloody events in Thel connected with the Maquis de Chauffailles are commemorated every year.

The “Itinéraire du 3 mai 1944” is a reconstruction of the route taken by a German unit on that day. The historic route led to the wooded peaks, to Catoux and to the Roche de Thel.

Hikes

The “Circuit de l’attaque contre le Maquis” leads to the Mémorial de Thel and covers 15 kilometres with a total elevation gain of 531 metres. Its second loop runs from Foupeysson to the Mémorial de Thel and back over 6 kilometres.

“Thel – Au delà du Mémorial” is an easy, 9.2-kilometre forest hike with viewpoints. Its named stages include the Mémorial and La Chevrelus. The hike starts at the Thel-Le Bourg car park, 52 Rue Louis Coillard, 69470 Thel.

Events

The “Chemins de la Mémoire” takes place every two years as a hike with two circular routes and ends with a ceremony conducted by children in front of the Mémorial de Thel.

Thel is connected via the RD64 departmental road from Cours La Ville towards Ranchal and Saint-Vincent-de-Reins.
