Savigny: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Savigny Abbey was founded around the year 1000 and was an important centre of medieval Christianity. The Tour de l’Horloge is part of the town’s surviving history: it was built in the 12th century as a prestigious entrance to the abbey. The tower had no military function; rather, it symbolised the power of the abbots.

Culture

The Musée lapidaire Antoine Coquard houses around one hundred listed sculptures and architectural elements from the former Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Martin. The collection also includes a large lintel depicting the Last Supper, dating from the 12th century. The collection was added to the inventory of historic monuments through entries dated 21 July 1959, 28 June 2019 and 9 January 2020.

Savigny Church is a neo-Gothic building completed in 1903 and constructed from locally quarried stone. Inside is a wooden Madonna and Child dating from the 13th century, originating from the former abbey.

The Chapelle Saint-Léger is the only religious building of Saint-Martin Abbey that has survived above ground. It is now incorporated into a private residence and cannot be visited. The Tour de l’Horloge, on the other hand, can only be visited accompanied by a volunteer from the association Savigny, Patrimoine d’hier et de demain.

Paths and Circular Walks

The Savigny historical trail is a 1 km out-and-back route and takes around one hour. It uses explanatory panels and interactive QR codes to present the remains of the former abbey visible in the village. A smartphone with an application for scanning QR codes is required for the trail. It is accessible every day throughout the year and is free of charge.

In Savigny’s old town centre, there is a treasure hunt centred around Savigny Abbey: the puzzle trail is designed for children and their parents, is suitable for children aged seven and over, and takes around one hour.

Landscape

The “Entre monts et coteaux” circular route is 8.5 km long and has 230 metres of ascent. It offers panoramic views over the rural landscape of the Monts et Coteaux du Lyonnais. It can be reached via TCL route 285 to the “Savigny – Place Des Rosiers” stop; the stop is less than a ten-minute walk away.
