The Sentier de la colline Nord, also known as the “Chemin de la Madone”, overlooks Chessy and offers views over the roofs of the golden-stone houses before leading to the medieval village centre.
Culture and History
The Château de Chessy was built in 1271–1272, expanded in the second half of the 15th century and restored in the Neo-Gothic style in the 19th century. A well-preserved entrance gate from the former fortifications remains at Bourgchanin. Parts of Chessy’s former town wall can be seen on the north-western and southern sides of the village centre.
The church in Chessy contains fragments of stained-glass windows that were listed by decree of 25 January 1908. The church’s stone holy-water font dates from 1556, is the work of Jehan Gerba from Chessy and has been listed since 1904. Chessy also has washhouses and fountains; one of the fountains is watched over by Saint Bartholomew.
The Château de Chessy, which overlooks Chessy, is privately owned and closed to visitors.
Trails and Landscape
The Sentier des Mines de Chessy is a 1.3-kilometre educational trail with information panels about the area’s geology, flora, fauna and history. The blue azurite associated with the Chessy mines was called “Chessylite” after its discovery in the 19th century.
The “Jeu de piste pour les petits et les grands” is a small booklet for discovering the village in the form of a treasure hunt.
