Culture
The Château de Sassenage is an example of 17th-century classical architecture and is classified as a historic monument. Inside, it preserves original features, including a stone grand staircase, a vaulted kitchen with a monumental fireplace, polychrome parquet floors and furniture bearing the marks of the Hache cabinetmakers.
The Church of Saint-Pierre de Sassenage was built on the banks of the Furon in the 11th century. The bell tower, chapel and ensemble with the church tomb are partly listed as historic monuments.
Nature
The ENS Marais des Engenières is a wetland at the foot of the foothills of the Vercors. Since 2002, the Marais des Engenières has been protected by a prefectural decree for the protection of biotopes. A landscaped path runs through the wetland, where visitors can learn about its history and the animals and plants that live there.
The Grotte Les Cuves de Sassenage is classified as natural heritage. It offers a guided route through underground galleries, natural pools and the flint gallery, as well as a sound-and-light presentation of the legend of Mélusine.
Activities
The Chemin des Cuves is located in the Vercors Regional Nature Park. The trail is 1.5 km long, has an elevation gain of around 150 m and takes approximately 1.5 hours to walk there and back; in dry weather, it is considered easy.
The pump track in Sassenage is freely accessible to bicycles, balance bikes, scooters, inline skates and skateboards. It has two urban riding tracks: a blue track for advanced riders with a medium level of difficulty and a red track for experienced riders.
Practical information
The pump track can be reached from the car park of the Halle Jeannie Longo through the entrance gate. The Château de Sassenage can be reached from tram line A at the Fontaine La Poya terminus by taking bus line 20 towards Veurey Mairie or bus line 50 towards Sassenage les Côtes, getting off at the Château stop.
The Château de Sassenage can only be visited as part of a guided tour: on the first Sunday of each month, except in July and August, at 10:30 a.m., and from 14 July to 15 August on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 3, 4 and 5 p.m.
