Clonas-sur-Varèze: Villa de Licinius and Le Plateau de Louze

Archaeological excavations located the Gallo-Roman Villa de Licinius beneath the present-day town centre of Clonas-sur-Varèze; a wall painting and a large mosaic are exhibited in a building erected by the municipality in 2007.

Culture

The mosaic of the god Oceanus was discovered in August 1996 and dates from the 2nd century AD. The mosaic, carefully restored by the workshops of Saint-Romain-en-Gal, and the excavated archaeological remains are now publicly displayed in the museum area of Villa de Licinius.

The painting “Saint Margaret” has been listed as a movable cultural object since 14 June 2007 and depicts the standing saint before a rocky landscape with a dragon at her feet. In the sacristy of the Église Sainte-Marguerite, the ciborium has been listed as a movable cultural object since 14 June 2007.
