Nature

The ENS Tourbière du Peuil lies at the foot of the Vercors cliffs at an altitude of 970 metres. It is one of the Vercors Massif’s rare wetlands and one of the last high-altitude peat bogs with sphagnum moss in the Isère département.

More than 200 species of flower can be observed at the Tourbière du Peuil. The local wildlife includes, among others, the bullfinch, the common frog, the palmate newt and the broad-bodied chaser.

The Colline de Comboire comprises dry, orchid-rich grasslands and 150-metre-high limestone cliffs. These extend over 1.6 kilometres and provide nesting sites for eagle owls and peregrine falcons.

The part of the municipality of Claix located between the Vercors cliffs and the Chemin de l’Abbé at Malhivert has belonged to the Parc naturel régional du Vercors since summer 2008.

History and Culture

Fort de Comboire was the last fort to be built in Grenoble’s defensive belt. It was constructed between 1882 and 1884 and is considered the best-preserved fort in this belt.

The Chapelle Saint-Jean was a former parish church; it has been documented as the property of the Cluniac monastery of Domène since 1085. It preserves a Gothic choir with recently restored 17th-century paintings.

The Château Delphinal was initially owned by the de Claix family, documented since 1108, and later by the Dauphins. Today, the keep with half of an oculus from the former chapel, as well as part of the medieval castle enclosure, are preserved.

The Vieux Pont de Claix sur le Drac was built between 1608 and 1610 by Jehan Albert and Pierre Salomon under the administration of the Duke of Lesdiguières. It has a single arch with a span of 46 metres, is located in the municipality of Claix and was protected as a historic monument by decree dated 27 May 1898.

The restored Vieux Pont Lesdiguières has been illuminated at night since 12 July 2010.
