Culture and History
The Church of Saint Maurice is a 19th-century neoclassical building in the Sardinian style and features a neoclassical altarpiece. The Maison Forte de Loche contains a tower-like dwelling whose defence relies essentially on the thickness of its walls and an upper defensive level. Dendrochronological studies date the wooden ceiling structure on the second floor to 1439; it is therefore considered one of the oldest coffered ceilings in the Rhône-Alpes region.
Oex is home to the Chapelle d’Oex, the oldest chapel in the municipality of Magland. The Chapelle Saint-Bernard-de-Menthon in Oex was built in 1680 and extended in 1842. Its small altar, dating from 1679, was created by Claude François Gradel and bears witness to the Baroque influence of its time.
Nature and Trails
The Mont-Ferront alpine pastures are located in the Aravis range, in a ZNIEFF natural area where a great variety of birds can be observed. The hike to the Chalet de Mont-Ferront follows a forest path to the alpine pastures there.
The Sentier thématique du bois Credo et la cascade d’Orlier is a 1.7 km circular trail with 120 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of 1 hour 30 minutes. The trail leads to the Tête de Louis-Philippe and the Cascade d’Orlier. Access to the waterfall via the thematic trail is closed for an indefinite period due to rockfalls.
Activities
The Moulinettes de Balme has seven limestone climbing routes with difficulty ratings ranging from 5c to 6c. The outdoor climbing area has a flat, rocky base and tree trunks serving as natural seating.
Canyon de Balme is a fun and sporty canyoning activity featuring waterfalls, slides and jumps in a green setting.

The Les Carroz Flaine Express bus route stops in Balme; the buses are equipped with bicycle racks.
