Culture and History

The Chapelle de la Ville is dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Pitié and Saint Claude. It was built by local residents in 1638; a mass is held there every year in May. The Chapelle des Evaux lies on the boundary between the municipalities of Saint-Pierre-en-Faucigny and Petit-Bornand. Every year on 15 August, a Marian pilgrimage and a mass take place there.

The Eglise du Petit-Bornand-les-Glières preserves several traces of history. The first church dates back to the 13th century. Inside, there is a fresco painted by George Herman in 1925 in honour of Saint Francis de Sales. The parish appears to have been founded in 1152 under the rule of the Savoyard Count Humbert III, the Blessed, by monks from the nearby Abbey of Entremont.

Local traditions are also part of the character of the place: The ovens of La Ville and Termine were restored to operation by volunteers between 1994 and 2004 and continue to provide an occasion for festivities. The Église de la Nativité de Marie in Le Petit-Bornand-les-Glières is also home to the painting “La Mise au tombeau”, a copy of a painting by Dirck van Baburen. It was listed as a protected historic monument on 28 July 1904.
