Les Pilles: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Les Pilles is situated on a rocky valley barrier that served as a toll station in the Middle Ages. The old village on the right bank stretches along both sides of the Grande rue. On the left bank, the Rue de la Combe winds between rocks and houses.
Culture and History
At the end of the Middle Ages, the Pont des Pilles was an important transport hub: it enabled both the north–south connection across the Eygues and the west–east connection, including to the village of Curnier. The Pont des Pilles was destroyed in 1944 and later rebuilt in its present form.
Les Pilles has been a listed protected site since 1946. The village church was rebuilt in 1870 by H. Epailly in the Romanesque style. The village houses are distinguished by characteristic wrought-iron balconies and overlook the river. The ruins of the castle and the village preserve the passage through the Eygues gorge.
“Pilles les Arts” is designed as an art trail throughout the municipality of Les Pilles and is intended to include several permanent or temporary works.
Nature
The Eygues is considered a Mediterranean river with a braided course. It experiences periods of low water and sometimes violent, sudden flooding. Over the course of the year, it changes its riverbed and winds through the valley.
The road to Les Pilles offers views of the Eygues and its meanders and leads through the sheltered low-mountain landscape of the Baronnies.
Routes
The “De l’Eygues au Bentrix” cycle route leaves Les Pilles via the bridge over the Eygues and then follows the paved D185 B road for 3.2 kilometres. The signposted “De l’Eygues au Bentrix” cycle loop starts and ends in Les Pilles.
Events
The biennial “Pilles sous les étoiles” festival for contemporary circus takes place at the end of April in odd-numbered years. In addition to a bar and light refreshments, the Café des Pilanthropes offers cultural, recreational and festive events.
