Culture and History

One particularly striking testament to the village’s history is the Église Saint-Marcel, which has been classified as a historic monument since being listed in 1846. Its present structure was built in the 12th century. The church features an octagonal dome richly decorated with symbols of the Evangelists and an entrance portal with archivolts dating from the 13th century.

A fortified pointed-arch gate marks the enclosure of the old village. During the restoration of the Église Saint-Marcel, wall paintings were discovered in the choir and transept. In the main apse in particular, they covered the entire wall surface and were arranged in three superimposed registers. The elaborate decoration was probably created in the 12th century. A Gallo-Roman counterweight from an oil or wine press has also been reused in the church façade.

Local Details

The Fontaine du Moulin is located opposite the washhouse at the intersection of Rue du Tilleul and the street of the same name. It is also known as the “Fontaine à Tête de Bacchus”. Its semicircular basin rests on a stone pedestal; water flows from the mouth of a bearded male face surrounded by hair. Grapes appear to be depicted in the beard, so it may be a reproduction of the face of the god Bacchus. The Fontaine du Moulin presumably refers to an earlier mill that was connected to the priory.

Local Life

A regular Sunday market takes place every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. throughout the year. A fruit seller and a cheese seller offer goods there for Sunday lunch.
