Culture and history

Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux became the seat of a bishopric in the Middle Ages. The Hôtel de Narbone-Pellet dates essentially from the 15th and 16th centuries and features elements of Late Gothic, early Renaissance and the so-called Second Renaissance.

The present-day bishop's palace was built in the 17th century on the site of a medieval building that had been destroyed during the Wars of Religion. The former cathedral was listed as a historic monument in 1841. It is characterised by elements of ancient architecture and is considered one of the finest examples of Provençal Romanesque art.

The medieval ramparts have been documented since the 12th century and are still very well preserved. Several fortified gates have survived and retained their defensive character.
