Culture and history

The Château de Satillieu is a remarkable cultural heritage site dating from the 18th century. It houses the “Don Quixote” room and the “Marquise’s Room”, featuring tapestries and wallpapers protected as historic monuments. Guided tours for groups are also offered at the Château de Satillieu.

The “Labyrinth of Forgotten Professions” leads through the streets of Satillieu to the Château de Satillieu. The streets often bear the names of old or forgotten trades. Children can easily follow an audio guide through the “Labyrinth of Forgotten Professions”.

The former silk factories are part of Satillieu’s industrial past. Residents’ memories of silk production in Satillieu were collected and presented in an exhibition.

Hiking

The Satillieu–Veyrines hike begins at the “Info-rando” sign next to the Satillieu tourist information office and follows the Nant valley. It is a moderately difficult, signposted 14 km circular route lasting 4 hours and 30 minutes.

La croix du Serre passes through the Soies valley and offers beautiful viewpoints. The hike returns to Satillieu via the GR42. It is a moderately difficult, signposted 11.2 km circular hike lasting 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Cycling

La Ronde du patrimoine begins at Place de la Faurie in Satillieu. It is a moderately difficult, signposted 32 km circular cycling route with 616 metres of elevation gain and a duration of 3 hours. The route offers the opportunity to discover the history of Val d'Ay amid nature and cultural heritage.

Local character

Satillieu is located at the confluence of the Nant and Malpertuis rivers.

Market and produce

Satillieu’s weekly market takes place from 1 January to 31 December every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Place de la Faurie. It brings together numerous local small-scale producers and craftspeople. The market offers meat, vegetables and cheese from local producers.

The Ferme de Garagnon in Satillieu offers seasonal organic vegetables; around forty types of vegetables are displayed at its stalls throughout the seasons.
