Nature
The Île de la Platière is a type 1 ZNIEFF natural area that includes Limony. It encompasses alluvial forests, natural meadows and the course of the Rhône. Its remarkable biodiversity includes 49 plant species and 30 animal species. The Île de la Platière is, among other things, designated as a national nature reserve, a bird protection area and a Special Protection Area. Numerous Lônes, or secondary channels of the Rhône, shape the area; some still carry water, while others have dried up.
Since 2012, the Île de la Platière nature reserve has had four publicly accessible discovery trails with a total length of more than 10 kilometres. The chain ferry providing access to the first trail may be out of operation when water levels in the Rhône or the Lônes are too high.
Hiking
The Le Montrond circular trail is 6.8 km long and has an elevation gain of 200 metres. The Le Montrond hike follows a circular route from Limony through the Montrond valley to Charnas. The “Le Rhône aménagé” interpretation trail runs along the eastern part of the Les Platières circular trail. This circular trail follows the slopes and the wild banks of the Rhône. Freshwater fishing is practised as a leisure activity in Limony.
History
The “Bac à traille de Limony” ferry has been documented since the mid-16th century. It operated from 1884 to 1915 and again from 1936 to 1962; it was discontinued in 1962. A roadside station dating from Roman times is documented in Limony’s present-day town centre. The Brèze archaeological site in Limony is recorded as a villa dating from the High Roman Empire to Late Antiquity. The Saint-Jean priory was built in the Limony area during the Middle Ages. Limony Church was remodelled in the 19th century.
Wine
The slopes of Limony belong to the Saint-Joseph cru wine-growing region. Limony has been part of the Condrieu AOC appellation area since 1940.
