Le Béage: Holiday Apartments and Houses

Landscape

Le Béage is located on the high plateaus of Ardèche in the heart of the Massif du Mézenc, at an altitude of 1,200 metres. The village lies between Mont Gerbier de Joncs and Lac d’Issarlès.

Hiking and Nature

The “Au pays des sucs, le tour du Montfol” route is of moderate difficulty, 12.2 kilometres long, takes four hours and follows a loop with 360 metres of ascent. This loop crosses the Natura 2000 site “Secteurs des sucs Gerbier et Mézenc”, whose heathlands are home to animal and plant life that is rare at European level. The flat summit of Suc de la Lauzière offers an impressive view of the other sucs in the massif.

Anyone planning a stay in Le Béage can rent a holiday apartment for this purpose.

Culture and History

The Rando-patrimoine Le Béage is an interactive circular tour for discovering the cultural heritage of several municipalities in the area.

The ruins of the Chartreuse de Bonnefoy date from the 18th century. The surviving structures include the priory house, the square tower and the entrance pavilion. The site is also home to the contemporary artwork “De l’autre côté” by Stéphane Thidet; it is part of the Parcours artistique du Partage des Eaux.

The Church of Le Béage, dedicated to Saint Peter, was built in 1862 and houses an enameled copper cross in repoussé technique originating from the Chartreuse de Bonnefoy.

Visitor Information

The Chartreuse de Bonnefoy is privately owned and cannot be entered outside guided tours. From the small car park at the edge of the site, visitors must walk 500 metres; an information board is located there. The nave of the Chartreuse de Bonnefoy is currently closed to visitors because of its severe deterioration.
