Landscape
The municipality of Sauze covers 2,777 hectares and extends from an altitude of 780 metres to 2,520 metres at Mont Saint-Honorat in the west.
Sauze is part of the 3,384-hectare Natura 2000 site “Sites à chauves-souris - Castellet-Les-Sausses et Gorges de Daluis”; 70 percent of the site lies in the Alpes-Maritimes département.
History
Sauze is first mentioned in the first half of the 13th century as a fortified settlement; at that time, it comprised a village and a church, which is mentioned in 1351.
From 1388 onwards, Sauze was a Savoyard enclave above the territories of Guillaumes. Its border location, as well as the wars between France and the House of Savoy, shaped the village.
Agriculture in Sauze included wheat, rye and lentils, as well as livestock farming, and contributed to a certain degree of prosperity until the middle of the 19th century.
Notre-Dame de la Colle is an emblematic building representing the history and identity of the village of Sauze.

The route Les hameaux de Sauze begins in the village of Sauze. It is a simply marked PR round-trip hike covering 8.5 kilometres, with a walking time of approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes.
On the Tour des Gorges de Daluis, the trail leads from the square in Sauze past a chapel and the hamlet of Sauze Vieux.
The marked Tour des Gorges de Daluis leads into the village of Sauze via trail markers 83a, 83 and 81.
The Balcons du Val d'Entraunes route follows a narrow forest track to the Moulins de Sauze.
Sauze can be reached via a winding road that climbs above Guillaumes and opens up magnificent panoramas along the way.
