Peille is an authentic medieval village dating back to the 11th century. Narrow lanes and vaulted passageways that are inaccessible to vehicles characterize the historic village center. Anyone choosing Peille for their stay may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Landscape
The village lies at an altitude of 630 m on the northern slope of Mont Baudon, between Mont Agel and Mont Rastel.
Culture
The Chapelle Saint-Martin dates from 1950–1952; Georges BUZZI was its architect. The building is not protected and has held the “patrimoine XXe” label from the Commission régionale du patrimoine et des sites (CRPS) since 15 March 2007.
The Chapelle Saint-Martin is visible from the mountain road. Through two large windows beside the altar, it opens onto a typically Provençal landscape characterized by olive trees.
The Chapelle Saint-Pancrace is a half-hour from the village of Peille on the historic Peille-Monaco path. The ruins of “Château et remparts”, located along a footpath, are also visible from the road.
Hiking
The “Circuit des cartes postales” trail leads around the village of Peille. Along the route, lava slabs from the volcanoes of Auvergne display old postcards at the locations where they were photographed.
The hiking trails around Peille are located at the foot of the Alps and along the GR5 and are accessible year-round. The Cîme du Farguet hiking route is listed as 9 km long, with an elevation gain of 550 m and an average duration of 2 hours 30 minutes.
Hikes in Peille can be undertaken alone, with the family, or with a guide. Guided accompaniment is available from the Maison d’Activités Pleine Nature de Peille by reservation.
The “Les chemins de l’eau” route allows visitors to discover old irrigation channels and historic water-distribution systems that were used for private and agricultural cultivation.
Getting There
From Nice, Peille can be reached via the A8, exit 57 “La Turbie”, followed by the D53 in the direction of “PEILLE”. Peille is also served by the “NICE-TENDE via Breil-Sur-Roya” TER network; La Grave de Peille station is 7 km below Peille Village.
