Montmorillon: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Pont Vieux in Montmorillon dates from the late 15th or early 16th century. The bridge once housed Montmorillon’s old prison, which collapsed on 14 July 1792 as a result of flooding.

Culture and History

The Église Notre-Dame de Montmorillon and its crypt were classified as historic monuments in 1862. The church’s frescoes are being supported scientifically, technically and financially during their restoration.

The old choir and the Romanesque bell tower are the only parts of the original 12th-century church building of the Église Saint-Martial that have been preserved. The rest of the building was rebuilt in the 19th century. In 1984, the Église Saint-Martial was listed as a historic monument.

Written Culture

The Cité de l’Écrit et des Métiers du Livre in Montmorillon emerged from the town’s history associated with books, which also included paper mills along the Gartempe. In the Cité, booksellers, antiquarian booksellers, painters, illuminators and draughtsmen open their studios to visitors.

At La Préface, visitors can view historic writing and calculating machines, hear how they work and try some of them out themselves. La Préface can be visited as part of a self-guided tour; guided tours are available by appointment only.

The Gartempe divides Montmorillon into two parts. Its banks offer a view of Montmorillon and the Église Notre-Dame.
