Touvre: Karst Spring, Bois Blanc and Sainte-Madeleine

Touvre reveals its distinctive character where the Bouillant karst spring forms the source of the Touvre River. The springs of the Touvre and the Lèche form France’s second-largest spring system after the Fontaine de Vaucluse near Avignon. In the wider Grand Angoulême area, the Touvre spring region has unique landscape, historical and ecological significance. Its biodiversity has led to the area being classified at national level.

The Bois Blanc forest is part of the landscape. It covers 703 ha and 4 a, of which 326 ha lie within the municipality of Touvre. These figures also show that the forest extends beyond the immediate local area. During walks around Touvre and in Bois Blanc, rare plants such as willow-leaved meadowsweet, grass-leaved buttercup and rock buckthorn can be observed, along with numerous mammals and birds, including roe deer and European nightjars.

Nature

The well-maintained paths and clearings in Bois Blanc are closed to motorised vehicles and are suitable for walks and recreation. As a result, the forest offers different impressions from those at the spring: here, paths, clearings, plants and wildlife observations shape the experience of nature, while the spring area establishes a connection with the water and the history of the landscape.

Hiking

Touvre is the starting point for the hiking trails Sentier de Touvre bois blanc, measuring 17 km, and Sentier de Touvre à Garat, measuring 16 km. The one-kilometre difference provides a simple comparison of the two signposted trail lengths. This makes it possible to consider shorter and longer hiking days as separate focuses without combining the trails into a single route.

Culture

The main structure of Sainte-Madeleine Church and its choir date from the 12th century. Sainte-Madeleine Church is listed as a historic monument. The four 12th-century capitals were listed on 26 April 1938, the portal on 22 August 1949, and the church as a whole on 8 February 2018. The church is open to the public.

Sainte-Madeleine thus brings together several periods: the medieval main structure and choir belong to the building’s history, while the listings from 1938, 1949 and 2018 distinguish chronologically between the individual protected elements and the building as a whole. The visit should be regarded as an independent cultural attraction alongside the nature and hiking themes.

The Artothèque d'Angoulème, a museum, is located in the vicinity of Touvre. Notre-Dame des Bezines, the historic Mousnier-Longpré site and Abbaye Saint-Cybard are also located near Touvre; all three are historic sites.
