Garat: Holiday apartments and houses

Culture

In the old centre of Garat stands the Romanesque Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens. It features construction phases from the 12th and 16th centuries; its gable facing the road is listed in the register of historic monuments. The bell tower is supported by a square, two-storey tower with round-arched windows.

By an order dated 4 August 1970, the façades and roofs of the Château de la Tranchade, including the entrance gate, were placed under heritage protection. The oldest part of La Tranchade was built towards the end of the 14th century; it is rectangular and has a blind façade.

The historic traces also include Garat’s former watermills, including the Moulin du Bas Arsac. They were used for grinding grain and producing walnut oil. The washhouses of Garat date from the time of Napoleon III and line the waterways and wells of the commune. A work by an artist is now installed in the former clay extraction area of the Tuilerie de Niollet.

The privately owned Château de la Tranchade welcomes visitors during Heritage Days or at events organised by the Pays d’art et d’histoire de l’Angoumois.

Nature

The Échelle Valley borders Garat to the east, while the Anguienne Valley borders the town to the west. The state-owned Forêt domaniale de Bois Blanc is also located east of Garat. The forest consists mainly of deciduous trees.

Orientation

Near Sainte-Catherine on the road to Dirac, there is a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the Château de la Tranchade. Those wishing to reach Garat by train should get off at Angoulême station.
