Landscape
The recreational area at Lac du Bois Fleuri features landscaped plantings by the lake and along its shore. Above the lake lie Les Jardins de Compostelle, a two-hectare flower park inspired by Hispano-Moorish design. Its special features include rare flowers, exotic species, local varieties and an olive grove. The gardens are open to the public seasonally.
Culture
The ruins of the Église Notre-Dame de Monthérault in Trizay have been protected as a historic monument since 28 October 1996. The church may date from the 10th or 11th century; the choir and bell tower were added in the 12th century.
Trizay Abbey was founded around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries and was subordinate to the important La Chaise-Dieu Abbey in Auvergne. The surviving choir end has an exceptional octagonal layout. The abbey features the chapter house with its multilobed arches and beautiful 13th-century rib vaults, the cellar, the large refectory with murals, and the monks’ dormitories decorated with frescoes.
Things to Do
The L’Abbaye de Trizay hiking trail begins at the car park by the lake in Trizay. The Tèrra-Aventura tour “Naufrage au Bois Fleuri” in Trizay is a two-hour, 3.5-kilometre route along the water.
The Circuit des Abbayes cycle route is 14.8 kilometres long and rated easy. Among other sights, it passes Lac de Trizay and Parc Floral, as well as Trizay Abbey.
