Royan is located on a large sandy beach at the entrance to the Gironde estuary. The nearby Plage du Chay is designated as a beach. Architecture

One of the city's notable buildings is Royan's central market. Its 10-centimetre-thick concrete roof rests on 13 points and does not require any internal support columns. The central market was renovated between 2023 and 2024.

Notre-Dame is a landmark of post-war architecture in Royan. The church was designed by Guillaume Gillet; its nave is spanned by a thin concrete shell. Royan's modern post-war reconstruction architecture was influenced by Brazilian architecture, particularly by the work of Oscar Niemeyer.

The permanent exhibition at the Centre d'Interprétation de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine presents Royan's architectural and urban development from the emergence of seaside resorts in the 19th century through to its reconstruction in the 1950s.

History and Museums

The permanent exhibition at the Museum of Royan presents the history of the city and the Pays royannais from prehistoric times through to the 1980s. The museum dedicates an important part of its presentation to the Second World War. It also contains a section on Pablo Picasso's stay from 1939 to 1940.

From Royan, the Cordouan lighthouse can be reached by boat in about an hour. In the immediate vicinity of Royan, Fort de Royan is considered a fortress. The surrounding area contains the Église Sainte-Radegonde, which is considered a church; the Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-fin-des-Terres, also considered a church, is located there as well.
