Soubise: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Soubise lies on the first rocky promontory reached from the sea, in the heart of the Charente estuary. The town has an inland port on the meanders of the Charente. Those choosing Soubise as their destination can opt to rent a holiday apartment.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Pierre de Soubise was built in the 12th century, remodelled in the 15th and 18th centuries, and is listed as a historic monument. It preserves Romanesque elements and a remarkable Gothic dome.

The Hôtel des Rohan is a Renaissance building with four storeys accessed via a central staircase. Its notable features include the exterior façade, the side wall and the ground-floor fireplace. The history of the town also includes the former Soubise ferry, which once provided access to a fortified site dominated by a powerful castle.

Springs and Nature

The Fontaine de la Rouillasse can be reached by a short walk through nature. It consists of a vaulted room with two basins and an underground drainage channel. The place name La Rouillasse derives from the iron-rich spring located there.

Along the Charente are extensive reed beds that provide important habitat for marsh birds such as Savi's warbler, reed bunting and zitting cisticola.

Water and Trails

A cycle path runs along the Charente from the port of Soubise to the Transbordeur Bridge near Échillais on the left bank. The Le Rohan ferry connects Soubise with Rochefort and with the Vélodyssée cycle routes.

The Le Rohan ferry can be boarded at the slipways in the ports of Soubise and Rochefort; pedestrians and cyclists can cross after signalling to the skipper.
