Culture

The Grottes du Régulus are a municipal troglodytic site built into limestone cliffs above the Gironde estuary. The caves of Meschers were originally natural and were expanded by people in the 19th century into a troglodytic dwelling. A visit to the Grottes du Régulus covers the history of the Protestant refuge during the Wars of Religion, geology, the Gironde estuary, fishing, carrelets, the history of the Régulus and the legend of Cadet the shipwreck survivor. The guided tour lasts 45 minutes and proceeds on foot along a route of approximately 200 metres equipped with ramps and handrails. Along the limestone cliffs of Meschers-sur-Gironde are also the Grottes de Matata.

The Église Saint-Saturnin was rebuilt in 1837. Its Flamboyant Gothic bell tower is the only surviving part of the 15th-century building and has been partially protected as a Historic Monument since 23 February 1925. Meschers' current Protestant Temple dates from 1842 and can be reached via a staircase leading to a small terrace.
